Welcome to The Rundown!

Friends, Moose Jaw has stories worth telling. Not just the big headlines — though we’ll cover those too — but the decisions being made at City Hall that quietly shape your neighbourhood, the businesses opening their doors with something new, the social media posts that make you laugh or shake your head, and the people doing interesting things that nobody’s talking about yet.

That’s why we built The Rundown.

What this is

The Rundown is a weekly podcast hosted by Crystal Froese and Gordon Edgar — two Moose Javians who pay attention to what’s happening in our city and think it deserves a closer look. Each week, we sit down to break down the news that matters most, dig into a topic or conversation that caught our eye, and wrap up with whatever the internet had to say about life in Saskatchewan.

The format is simple and intentional. We’re not trying to be a 90-minute deep dive you’ll never finish (although we will post any longer interviews we do, in case you’re interested!) We’re aiming for 15 to 20 minutes — enough to keep you informed of the important Moose Jaw happenings, without taking over your Sunday morning.

Here’s what a typical episode looks like:

  • We open with a quick-hit rundown of the week’s most important local news — provincial announcements, council decisions, community developments — with our honest take on what it means for you.
  • Then we move into a longer segment: An interview with someone doing something worth hearing about, or a closer look at a topic that deserves more than a headline.
  • We close with a few moments from social media — the good, the baffling, and the occasionally brilliant — pulled from places like MJ Talks and r/saskatchewan.

Who we are

Crystal Froese brings years of firsthand experience in how Moose Jaw works. A two-term city councillor, former Chair of the Police Commission, Prairie South School Board trustee, current Honorary Colonel for 15 Wing Moose Jaw, and member of ten community boards and committees, Crystal has been in the rooms where decisions get made. She also co-founded Coteau Hills Creamery — the city’s first artisan cheese facility — with her husband Kirby after returning home from British Columbia in 2011. She handles graphic design and marketing for several organizations, knows this city inside and out, and she’s not afraid to say what she thinks.

Gordon Edgar is a writer, podcaster, and journalist whose lifelong quest is a full understanding of consciousness, motivations, social pressures, et cetera. He handles the production and technical side of The Rundown, and brings a curiosity about the stories behind the stories. Crystal knows how the machine works, and Gordon wants to know why it was built that way in the first place.

Why we’re doing this

Moose Jaw is a city of roughly 35,000 people, and it deserves media that treats local news like it matters — because it does. The decisions made at council, the businesses that open and close, the infrastructure projects that affect your commute, the social issues that touch your neighbours — these things shape daily life far more than most national headlines ever will.

We’re not here to replace the excellent local journalists already doing this work. We’re here to add another voice to the conversation — one that’s informal, accessible, and rooted in genuine care for this community.

The Rundown is a community service project. We’re not backed by advertisers, concerned with political perceptions, or beholden to anyone. If a local business wants to support what we’re doing with a small sponsorship, we’ll happily give them a shout-out — but editorial independence isn’t negotiable. We call it like we see it.

What’s coming

Over time, you can expect The Rundown to grow. We’ll develop recurring features — local business spotlights, explainers on how things like development permits and school board decisions actually work, and historical context that connects today’s news to Moose Jaw’s past. We’re also building a tip line so you can send us stories, leads, questions, and suggestions. If something’s happening in your corner of the city that deserves attention, we want to hear about it.

For now, this website is home base. You’ll find every episode here, along with information about your hosts and a way to get in touch. Subscribe to the podcast on your preferred platform, and check back regularly as we add new content and features.

We’re glad you’re here. Let’s get into it.
